After more than four decades of services, SEAMEO BIOTROP has played a strategic role in the development of research, training and information delivery of various aspects of tropical biology in the region.To maintain its vision, mission and goals, short of budget provided by the host government and donors is a serious limiting factor.This can only be sustained by improved income generating activities and self supporting programme to overcome fnancial shortfall.The support by the Centre's partners and collaborators from international and national organization as well as from the private sector were substantial. However, it should be noted a number of achievements has been done both on the programme and activities as well as trie improvement of quality and efciency of management.

The Centre has pioneering the initiative to support the education program through the establishment of Bogor Science Park.The Park which has been initiated during the last fscal year is ready to be ofcially operated by the end of 2009. The involvement of SEAMEO BIOTROP in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Programme through Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) has been recognized. RCE Bogor has been noted by UNU-IAS committee as one of the most active RCE.

In early 2009, the Centre has been awarded certifcate from International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in quality management system (ISO 9001:2000). Previously, in December 2008, the Services Laboratory received certifcate of re-accreditation of ISO/IEC 17025:2000 which already been ' hold since 2006. It will certainly support the management of BIOTROP to fulfil its mission to become a centre of excellence. This certifcate is an acknowledgement that SEAMEO BIOTROP has been implementing quality management system.

Among other programmes and activities, the Centre has endorsed various community development and empowerment programmes to strengthen its visibility and role in the community. An initiative of SEAMEO BIOTROP has been drawn on expanding join program at KIIC, together with IPB and three other Indonesia-based SEAMEO Centre.

During Fiscal Year 2008/2009, the Centre conducted 20 training courses and 4 workshops, and 6 seminars with a total of 1342 participants to join various levels of training courses and workshops. These activities were successfully conducted through the support of various national and international funding agencies and donors.

Begun in 1998, the Master of Science in InformationTechnology (MIT) for Natural Resources Management (NRM) programme is the frst and the only international graduate programme of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB). During the fscal year under review, a total of 25 students enrolled in the academic year 2008-2009. Six students graduated during fscal year 2008-2009. MIT for NRM programme has participated in supporting the internationalization of Bogor Agricultural University.

Thirty three seminars were presented either by the researchers and MIT students. On the other side, SEAMED BIOTROP academic staf attended 62 various seminars, scientifc meetings at national and international level.

A total of 21 research projects were currently on-going comprises of 18 national and 3 international funded projects.The national funding comes from the Government of Indonesia under the DIPA Research Programme (15 topics) and Competitive Research Grant of Ministry of Research and Technology (one topic) as well as initial collaborative project with National Atomic Energy Agency (BATAN). A researcher of SEAMEO BfOTROP involves as a team member of two international research project.The international agencies involved were the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). One project was done through the support of international Research Programme of Directorate General Higher Education, Ministry of National Education.

The training courses have been done at SEAMEO BIOTROP has been done on tissue culture, organic farming and entrepreneurship for teachers and educators, under the support of the Government of Indonesia through DIPA. During the period under review, 11 training courses have been conducted with approximately 30 participants for each topic.

Community development is one of the activities of corporate social responsibility (CSR) to empower people in supporting themselves to fulfil their daily needs. Karawang International Industrial City (KIIC) as an industrial zone has the obligation to develop the surrounding community. The centre also took initiative in empowering society around SEAMEO BIOTROP campus by conducting a series of training on catfsh culture and mushrooms cultivation for the community.

During the fscal year under review, SEAMEO BIOTROP researchers published articles in 6 refereed journals, 2 books, 11 proceedings, and 11 technical reports. Other publications include Annual Report, Governing Board Meeting Report, BIOTROP Courier, administrative reports and brochures.

SEAMEO BIOTROP ofers consulting services and provides technical assistance to government, research institution, community, private company as well as NGO.The areas of consultation are ranging from agriculture (including fsheries, livestock, forestry), environment as well as other natural resources..

SEAMEO BIOTROP, as an institution dedicated to contribute in the area of tropical biology should be aware and responded to a number of internal and external issues.The global demand of food and renewable energy as well as global warming and climate change is part of the Centre concern. Thematic research on food, feed and energy which has been started in the past few year has to be continued.The inter Centre cooperation and collaboration within SEAMEO should be initiated, particularly within Centre of similar interest and mandate.
