BIOTROP Courier Vol. XVIII Q3 2016
Technologies to grow food are advancing very rapidly nowadays, following the decrease in land availability, to meet the increasing demand for food. Urban farming is one technology to increase food production, especially in limited area. With urban farming, food can be produced in each household to fulill the nutritional needs of the family. BIOTROP is focusing on efforts to improve and disseminate the urban farming technologies by signing a Memorandum of understanding with SEAMEO Centre for Lifelong Learning and by holding training on catfish culture using a knock-down fish pond technology.
BIOTROP's role in food security is recognized by the West Java Province Government by awarding Dr Hartrisari Hardjomidjojo, one of BIOTROP's scientist, and her team for their research on Decision Support System on Spatial Planning for Food Security. Tissue culture training was also conducted to disseminate the technology to other instititutions.
Food safety is also among BIOTROP's priorities which led to an MoU signing between BIOTROP and Universias Sam Ratulangi on Nutmeg Quality Improvement, followed by Training on Trainer in related subject.
As a continuation of the successful GIS training held last quarter, BIOTROP now focuses on familiarizing high school students with Geographic Information System (GIS) by inviting high school teachers to join the Training in Practical Applications of GIS as a Teaching Material for Senior and Vocational High Schools Teachers.
